Songs we love and love to hate at Christmas

Family enjoying christmas songs

Following on from my article regarding how much money Christmas songs potentially make every year, I had an urge to listen to various Christmas tunes. This will be the first year I use Spotify for this task, as I'm currently working from home and not listening to tunes driving to and from work.

I realised that I’m quite into all the Christmas stuff. That said, some Christmas songs I really hate and I feel more like the Grinch when they come on.

Not everyone can like every Christmas tune, can they? I'm not alone in both loving and hating the same Christmas tracks played year in, year out, am I? I decided to test my theory and ask my fellow colleagues which Christmas songs they like and which they hate.

I’ll start...

Paul

Love: Slade - Merry Xmas Everyone

One of my favorites from when I was younger, very few Christmas tunes (at that time) had a rock style/vibe, and I found it a refreshing change to the usual pop collection.

Hate: the Pogues - Fairytale of NewYork

I really cannot stand this song. The depressing undertones, the fact that vocals from both parties are terrible, and the whole premise of a break-up during the festive season rubs me up the wrong way. I don't understand why it's cited as the best Christmas song in the UK and Ireland.

Guilty Pleasure: Proper Crimbo - Bo-Selecta

An old song that some might find offensive today, I love the cheesy party vibe it projects. I remember when Bo-Selecta was a big thing, and seeing all the celebrities in its music video hints towards nostalgia for me.

Diane

Love: Boney M - Mary's Boy Child

It always puts a smile on my face. I love Boney M as artists anyway and this gospel-style pop tune is often first on my Christmas playlist. I used to have Mud's 'Lonely This Christmas' as my personal Christmas number one, but it's a bit depressing nowadays.

Hate: Wham - Last Christmas

There's something about this song that sets my teeth on edge - it's so whiny! I know many people love it but both the song and the video are pap, in my eyes. I’ve already failed Whamageddon this year, unfortunately.

Guilty Pleasure : The Jackson 5 - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

It sounds like it was written for children to enjoy, which should make me dislike it, but, on the quiet, I actually think it sounds quite cute.

Pam

Love: I Believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lakes

Can't beat a traditional song at Christmas, and this is my favourite.

Hate: The Jackson 5 - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

Sorry, Diane, it's so cheesy!

Liz

Love: Do They Know it's Christmas (1984 version) - Band Aid

An absolute classic, though it was difficult to whittle it down to just one favourite as I love practically everything about Christmas and I love Christmas songs.

Hate: Cliff Richards - Mistletoe and Wine

I'm not a fan of Cliff Richard, but as he's my nan's favourite, we're forced to play this every Christmas.

Guilty Pleasure: Andy Williams - It's the most wonderful time of the year

Brett

Love: Frank Sinatra - Santa Claus is coming to Town

It reminds me of my childhood.

Hate: Justin Bieber - It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Justin absolutely butchers a classic here.

Guilty Pleasure: Andy Williams - It's the most wonderful time of the year

Hey, Justin, this is how it should be done...take notes.
